How we make money

Everything on this site is free to read and there's nothing to buy from us. So it's fair to ask where the money comes from, and here's the whole answer.
Some of the links to other companies' products are affiliate links. If you click one and sign up for something, that company may pay us a commission. You pay exactly the same price — an affiliate link never makes a product more expensive, and there is no version of the same product that costs less without our link.
The rules we hold ourselves to
We say so, every time. Where a link earns us a commission, it's marked right there next to the link. Not only on this page, buried where nobody looks.
The commission never decides what we write. If a tool is mediocre we say it's mediocre, and if the free option is better than the paid one we say that too — including when the paid one is the one that pays us.
We only mention things we'd suggest to a friend. There is no list of products we've agreed to promote in exchange for anything. Nobody pays us to be written about, and nobody sees what we write before you do.
Free advice stays free. The six resets on the home page cost nothing, require nothing, and don't lead anywhere you have to pay. They're the point of the site — not the bait.
What happens when you click one
The company you land on knows you arrived from us, usually through a cookie or a tracking code in the address. From that moment their privacy policy applies, not ours — we don't see who you are, what you looked at or what you bought. We only see a number telling us how many people signed up.
Why we're telling you
Partly because the law requires it: in the United States the Federal Trade Commission requires that a material connection between a publisher and a product is disclosed clearly, and similar rules apply across Europe. Mostly, though, because a site about calm that hides how it's funded has already lost the point.
